I really struggle with being happy, so I was excited to be able to review Talk Yourself Happy by Kristi Watts. It’s really made me think about the things I say and do that are making it hard for me to be happy. The book gives me practical solutions to overcome them.

What I Got From the Book
I enjoyed reading this book, and found something I needed to hear in every chapter. Right from the introduction, I learned about the power of my words and how they have the power to change, for good or bad. I talk a lot, so I knew I would learn a lot from a book called, Talk Yourself Happy!
I could really relate to the author and her story. Even though I haven’t gone through the same exact circumstances she has, it’s still really easy to relate to the feelings she has about other people, and in certain situations. Like when she talked about how we become too consumed with our own pain, and have a “movie reel within my mind, recollecting every negative event…” I do that all the time, especially at night when I’m trying to sleep. Then she reminds us that our words reflect what’s in our hearts. So, if I’m only thinking about the negative, that’s what’s going to come out.
Thankfully, the author doesn’t just leave us stuck there. She gives us practical ways to “talk ourselves happy.” Some examples are, saying out loud how God is(God is faithful), who God is(God is all knowing), and what God says(God will never abandon us(Deuteronomy 31:8)). Also, we shouldn’t be “begging God to change our circumstances when the truth is, what really needs changing is us.” So, we should speak words about ourselves that agree with what God says about us. Words like, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Psalm 139:14. If you start speaking words like these instead, then your words won’t consume your peace, joy and happiness. They will in turn, give you these things.
I’ve started applying what I’ve learned from this book. When I start thinking about negative things, I’ll catch myself, and stop. Instead, I start thinking of Scripture or Christian songs. When I focus on those things, it takes my mind off my circumstances and fills me with joy and peace. I have to admit, this process is going to take awhile, because I do tend to complain a lot. However, if I stick with it, I think everyone around me will be happier. I know I will be happier too!
