I never knew who Rory and Joey Feek were until Joey got cancer, and then I followed their story on Facebook. The love that they had for each other and their family was extraordinary! I previously reviewed Rory Feek’s book, This Life I Live, One Man’s Extraordinary, Ordinary Life and the Woman Who Changed It Forever. So when I saw that he had written another book, I couldn’t wait to read it! This book is a great way to get to know all about Rory and Joey, and their life together. Also, now about Rory’s life without Joey.
Book Description of Once Upon a Farm
Now raising their four-year-old daughter, Indiana, alone, after Joey’s passing, Rory Feek digs deeper into the soil of his life and the unusual choices he and his wife, Joey, made together and the ones he’s making now to lead his family into the future.
When Rory Feek and his older daughters moved into a run-down farmhouse almost twenty years ago, he had no idea of the almost fairy-tale love story that was going to unfold on that small piece of Tennessee land . . . and the lessons he and his family would learn along the way.
Now two years after Joey’s passing, as Rory takes their four-year-old daughter Indiana’s hand and walks forward into an unknown future, he takes readers on his incredible journey from heartbreak to hope and, ultimately, the kind of healing that comes only through faith.
A raw and vulnerable look deeper into Rory’s heart, Once Upon a Farm is filled with powerful stories of love, life, and hope and the insights that one extraordinary, ordinary man in bib overalls has gleamed along the way.
As opposed to homesteading, this is instead a book on lifesteading as Rory learns to cultivate faith, love, and fatherhood on a small farm while doing everything, at times, but farming. With frequent stories of his and Joey’s years together, and how those guide his life today, Rory unpacks just what it means to be open to new experiences.
“This isn’t a how-to book; it’s more of a how we, or more accurately, how He, God, planted us on a few acres of land and grew something bigger than Joey or I could have ever imagined.”Did you follow the story of Joey and Rory Feek? My Opinion of Once Upon a Farm
When I do a book review, I usually list all of the chapter names for you, but Once Upon a Farm, has 56 chapters, so that would be too many to list. The nice thing about all of those chapters, though, is they are all fairly short. You could easily read one chapter each night before bed. In fact, that’s exactly what I did!
I really looked forward to reading this book every night. I couldn’t wait to hear more about Rory’s life now, and with Joey. I’ve always been fascinated by reading about famous people’s lives, so this book is perfect for me.
The book gives you the backstory to why things are the way they are now in Rory’s life. It’s really neat to see how he got to where he is now. The book starts off with Rory on the way home, after Joey passed away. He talks about when he first made the drive to meet Joey’s parents for the first time. Then, he talks about the moment Joey passed away. He transitions back to the drive home.
A lot of the book is like that. Rory talks about where he is now, tells a story about why/how he got to that place/situation. Then, brings it back to what else he wants to tell you about what’s happening now.
It’s really neat that Rory told the story this way. To see all the connections from the past to the present is fascinating to me. It’s neat to see how God has been there all along in Rory and Joey’s lives and their family’s life.
Also, Rory is a dad, who makes mistakes like all parents do. He’s very honest about looking back at his life, raising his two older girls, and his life with them now. He also shares about raising Indiana. To see that even this famous dad can make mistakes parenting, makes me feel not so discouraged about the parenting mistakes I make too. I always think of famous people living these absolutely perfect lives. So, to see that they’re just people like you and me, just makes me feel better about my life.
This book is such an easy book to read because the story is so captivating! Plus, the cute cover on the front makes me smile every time I pick it up. When the book came in the mail, I showed it to the rest of my family. They all went, “Awww!”
If you’re like me and are fascinated by reading the story of famous people’s lives, you should read this book. If you’ve ever been through any hard times in your life, like losing a spouse, this would be a great book for you. It will encourage you to read how a family can go through such hard times, yet still come out on the other side.
