Since my family and I had to go on a heart healthy diet 5 years ago, I’m always on the look out for new cookbooks and new recipe ideas. When I find one I think I’ll like, I put it on my Amazon wishlist so my husband will have gift ideas for my birthday or Christmas.

Well, for my birthday this past May, my husband bought me the Go Fresh: A Heart-Healthy Cookbook with Shopping and Storage Tips. It’s from the American Heart Association. I already enjoy using a cookbook from them, which you can read about in my post, Heart Healthy Cookbooks That I Love. So, when I saw they had another cookbook, I really wanted to try it.
About this Heart Healthy Cookbook
The cookbook is 320 pages and comes as a paperback. It has a preface, healthy tips, recipes, and appendixes. It’s published by the American Heart Association and has input from 6 different recipe developers and a nutrition analyst; 2 of those 6 are registered dietitians.
Preface – It’s one page telling you why you should eat fresh based on scientific research.
Healthy Tips – There are fresh, fast, and healthy tips to let you know that eating fresh food doesn’t have to take a lot of time.
Shopping for and Storing Fresh Foods – This section tells you how to shop for and store vegetables and herbs, fruit, fish and shellfish, meat and poultry, and dairy products.
Quick Tips – You’ll learn how to prep and cook in order to save time.
Nutrition Tips – It tells you why variety is important and what to cut back on in order to help your heart.

Recipes in this Heart Healthy Cookbook
The first page in this heart healthy cookbook gives you guidelines about the nutritional analysis of the recipes so that you’ll understand how how they’re written. Each recipe states the serving size, prep time, and cooking time. Some of the recipes even include tips, tricks, and time savers; shop and store tips; and cook’s tips. There are 11 different recipe categories. In the center of the book, are several pages of beautiful colored photos of some of the recipes.
Appetizers, Snacks, and Beverages – I liked several different recipes here. That’s probably because we’re really big on snacks in our house!
Creamy Avocado-Chive Dip – great to have with bell peppers, broccoli, carrots and celery, unsalted tortilla or pita chips, or as a spread on a sandwich or burger
Dill Dip – great with the same fresh vegetables mentioned above, or also grape tomatoes or cucumber spears
Baked Nachos – easy to make, low in fat and salt, and full of flavor
Rise-and-Shine Shake – adds some yogurt, strawberries, peaches and bananas to your morning orange juice
Peanutty Chocolate-Banana Freezer – a yummy, healthy shake that is refreshing
Soups – I don’t really like soup, but one of them looked so good, I couldn’t resist
Chicken and Rotini Soup with Vegetables – this soup includes bell pepper, cauliflower and broccoli for color and texture.
Salads and Salad Dressings – They sound good, but we don’t eat fancy salads.
Seafood – This Herbed Halibut and Spring Vegetables recipe looks really colorful!
Poultry – I think we would like the Country Thyme Chicken Strips, dipped in low fat ranch of course!
Meats – This includes recipes for steak, burgers, and pork.
Vegetarian Entrees – There are 25 recipes in this section, so there are plenty to choose from for Meatless Mondays or if you’re a vegetarian.
Vegetables and Side Dishes – I’m always looking for new vegetable recipes in the hopes of finding some the kids might like.
These broccolini and roasted brussels sprouts look pretty good. I also thought we would like Lemon Artichokes and Sauteed Zucchini with Parmesan.
Sauces and Condiments – There’s quite a bit to choose from, but we don’t use these kinds of sauces.
Breads and Breakfasts –
We love yogurt and oatmeal in our house, so I though these Fruity Oatmeal Yogurt Parfaits looked really good! I also think we would like Maple-Pumpkin Oatmeal with Apple and Spiced Yogurt Topping.
Desserts – The Dark Chocolate Pudding with Banana Slices sounds really yummy!
Appendixes in this Heart Healthy Cookbook
There are three appendixes in this heart healthy cookbook, and they all give you helpful tips to improve your cooking knowledge and know-how.
Appendix A – This gives you a food storage guide for vegetables, fruit, fish, poultry, meat, and dairy. It tells you the best place to keep the food items in the refrigerator, how long they stay good for in the refrigerator, and in the freezer.
Appendix B – Vegetable Cooking Times. It tells you how long to cook vegetables when you steam, boil or simmer, saute or stir fry, microwave, bake or roast, or grill them.
Appendix C – This is one of my favorites, because I never know the right amount of fruits or vegetables to use when the recipe asks for it in cups. There’s a chart that gives you those answers!
So, as you can see, there are so many delicious recipes to choose from in this Go Fresh: A Heart-Healthy Cookbook with Shopping and Storage Tips. It’s not only for people looking to live a specifically heart healthy life, it’s for anyone who just wants to eat fresh and eat healthier.
