Did you know you can save money on household supplies too, not just on food? It’s so great to be able to find deals on things you use around the house, including personal care, pet food, and baby items, like diapers. So, not only can you save on things like treats, dairy, produce, and meat, but also everything else you buy at the grocery store and drugstore too.
How to Save on Cosmetics
I know that a lot of you really like buying high-end cosmetic brands, but if you are really serious about saving money, you need to compare the lower-end brands and truly look in the mirror and see if there is really that much difference in how you look. I think you’ll find out that lower-end brands make you look just as beautiful.
There are quite a lot of coupons available for cosmetics, and they’re usually pretty nice coupons too. They’re usually for around $2.00 off, and sometimes even for $5 off! You can find these in the Sunday newspaper, in the mail from using your store’s loyalty card, with your receipt at the cash register, or manufacturer’s websites(you can find free samples here sometimes also).
Look for sales. Cosmetics often go on sale for 50% off or even buy one get one free deals. When you pair these sales with your coupons, you can end up getting it for a really low price. Even drugstores are offering great sales on cosmetics, paired with coupons, and even money back, like the extra care bucks at CVS I talked about last week.
Check with your store for their refund policy. Some stores are willing to let you return the cosmetics if you don’t like them. So, if that’s the case, there’s certainly no harm in trying a lower-end more affordable brand, since you can always return it if you’re not satisfied. If you do like it, than you just found another great way to save money!
How to Save on Toiletries/Personal Hygiene Items
These are great items to stock up on because they don’t have an expiration date and they don’t go bad. When shampoo, body wash, deodorant, toothbrushes, and floss go on sale for a low price, and I have coupons, I always stock up on them for the whole family. We have a cupboard full of these items, so whenever anyone runs out, they just have to grab one from the cupboard. I even have enough to help other families in our church when they’re down on their luck and need a little helping hand.
You can also find these items at wholesale clubs. You should compare the per unit price with what you buy at the grocery store, to find out what items are cheaper at the wholesale club. I buy my son’s shampoo, and my daughter’s shampoo and conditioner at Costco because they often go on sale for a really great price. I also buy my daughter’s and my razors there and her makeup remover wipes. I recently started purchasing our toothpaste and toothbrushes there also because their sales prices beat the sales in the grocery store. I just always keep my eye out on their sales book and compare the unit prices to see who has the better deal.
Sometimes the drugstores offer the better deals. All of my shampoo and body washes that I have stocked up in my cupboard are from deals I found at the drugstore. I haven’t had to buy any shampoo or body wash for myself in over a year because of the great deals I took advantage of. I was able to combine sales and coupons to get many products for under $1.00 and several for free! Whenever I get close to running out, I’ll look for those great deals again.

How to Save on Pet Food
I don’t have a pet, so everything I’m going to tell you about how to save on pet food, I learned from the Coupon Mom. Sometimes, saving money on pet food can be hard because your animal may only like one specific brand or because of health issues and vet recommendations, you have to stick with one brand. However, there are still ways to save money.
You can use coupons to get the best deals. When I look through the coupons in the Sunday paper, I pass by a lot of pet food coupons, so I know there are some available. You can also go to a manufacturer’s website and get coupons from there, and even sign up for their email, and they’ll send you coupons once in awhile too.
Big pet stores are usually much cheaper than grocery stores. Sometimes they’ll even match other store’s coupons and sales, if you ask. Also, buying the biggest bag of pet food will usually be the best unit price. You can find these at wholesale clubs, discount stores, or large pet stores.
Even if you don’t have a pet, but really love animals, you can take advantage of these pet food deals and buy some to donate to your local animal shelter. Some other agencies, like food banks, or other social service agencies might also accept pet food.
How to Save on Laundry Detergent
When comparing laundry detergent prices, you don’t compare per unit/ounce, you compare per load. This is because of the different concentrations and forms that the detergent comes in. Also, in this instance, quality does matter. Some lower-quality detergents might not keep your clothes looking new for as long as a high-quality detergent would. So, you would end up having to buy clothes more often, and that would end up costing you more money. In this case, it’s better to buy a higher-quality detergent so your clothes will last longer.
Even laundry detergents have coupons and go on sale. You can find these sales at supermarkets, drugstores, and discount stores. It’s important to compare what size container is the best deal. Sometimes with the sales and coupons, the regular size bottles might be a better deal than the larger size.
Since different brands go on sale at different times, if you’re willing to switch brands, you can always find one on sale, and usually a coupon or two to go along with it.
Usually the powdered laundry detergent is the cheapest form. The liquid detergent or even the new pods now are usually more expensive. Also, the detergent with added things like bleach, extra ingredients, or new fragrances are often more money. You can just purchase your own bleach separately to add in, and bleach is really inexpensive. You can also buy your own fabric softener, rather than purchasing an extra fancy detergent that costs more.
Make sure you use the right amount. The package has instructions on how much detergent you need based on what kind of washing machine you have, how much is in your load, and how dirty it is. Also, every time you buy detergent, even if it’s the same brand, make sure you check these instructions because they often change. You don’t want to end up using too much and end up going through your box of detergent much faster than you should.
How to Save on Diapers
The Coupon Mom says a parent can save an “average of $800 per child …. by comparing prices and buying your diapers at the lowest unit price possible.” That’s a huge savings!
When looking at diaper prices, it’s best to compare the unit cost per diaper. Since different brands and packages have a different number of diapers in them, this is the best way to see which one offers the lowest price. Some packages all have the same claim on them, like a “jumbo” pack of diapers, but they might all have a different amount of diapers in them.
Try out different brands and see which one works for your child. For some babies, you may be able to use the generic brand, but for some babies, the generic brand might leak. So, it’s best to start with the least expensive and then just keep trying different ones until you find one that works for your baby.
Diapers are a great item to stock up on when they go on sale. Look through the coupons in the Sunday paper, and if you have friends or relatives that get coupons and don’t have babies anymore, maybe they’d be willing to give you their diaper coupons. You can also look online at Amazon.com or Diapers.com for coupons and subscribe and save programs. When you sign up for diaper companies’ emails, they often offer coupons and rewards programs. You may even earn free merchandise!
Wholesale clubs usually have the lowest cost per diaper. When my kids were babies, that’s where I bought their diapers. Only once in awhile can a really great sale combined with coupons at another store, beat their prices. Look for the coupons in the wholesale clubs books, or some clubs even take manufacturer’s coupons. Just be sure and know your store’s policies, and then take advantage of the great deals when you can, and stock up.
You can use these same ideas to stock up on other baby items like wipes, formula and bath products.
How to Save on Cleaning Products
There are lots of different ways to save on cleaning products – from how you purchase them to how you use them.
I can usually find lots of coupons for cleaning supplies in the Sunday paper or online. I make sure and stock up when they’re on sale and when I have coupons.
About 1/2 of my cleaning products are bought at a wholesale club. They have the best prices and often have coupons for the products. I only buy 1/2 of my cleaning products there because they don’t have all of the cleaners I use.
You can also save money by the way you clean. You can wash windows with a newspaper, or with a reusable/washable cloth rag. In fact, I clean a lot of things with those rags, instead of using a ton of paper towels.
There’s a big thing right now going around on Pinterest and other places, about making your own cleaners. People are doing it because they want to use nontoxic products in their homes. They can cost up to 80% less than cleaning products you buy in the store. All you need is a spray bottle and the right ingredients, and you’re all set. The Coupon Mom also has some “recipes” on how to make your own cleaning products in her book.
How to save on Party Supplies
Party supplies can be so expensive, so I love finding deals on them!
One of my favorite places to save is the Dollar Tree store. I just bought a Father’s Day card for my dad and husband at the Dollar Tree this morning, because the cards only cost $0.50 each! Have you looked at a card in a regular store lately? They’re $4 – $5! Dollar Stores are also a great source for gift bags, cake decorations, party favors, invitations, streamers, plates, and cutlery. You can also get several balloons here, for the price of one anywhere else.
So, as you can see, food isn’t the only thing you can save money on at the stores. You can also save lots of money on household supplies, once you learn how to shop sales, use coupons, and compare prices. With all of these tips, you’ll see the difference in your bank account in no time!
